Make Our Cities Greener
Many things have been done and great progress has been made in the greenization of our cities in recent years. Many trees have been planted and much care has been taken of the planted trees. But, in spite of all this, greenization in the cities in China is far from satisfactory compared with cities in other countries in the world. For example, the green space for every people in Shanghai is only 2 square meters while that of the people in London exceeds 20 square meters.
We can benefit much from the greenization of our cities. First, trees absorb carbon dioxide which is harmful, but produce oxygen which is essential to human beings. Secondly, with trees all around, our cities will look more beautiful. Thirdly, trees can improve the climate of the cities, making it neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter.
Since we can get so much benefit from making our cities greener, we should spare no effort to do so. We should plant even more trees and take even better care of them while they are growing. Besides, we should not cut down trees any more. In a word, we should do everything to add to the greenization of our cities.
In recent years our cities have become much greener. A lot of trees, grasses and flowers were planted in vacant plots and on both sides of the street. The area of urban afforestation per person has been greatly increased.
There are a lot of advantages for urban afforestation. First, trees, grasses and flowers can make the city more beautiful, for natural plants are well matched with artificial buildings. Secondly, plants can purify air in the city because they not only absorb carbon dioxide and the flying dust but release oxygen. Thirdly, plants can muffle noises produced by vehicles and machines. Finally, trees can improve climate in that they can alleviate intense heat in summer and severe cold in winter.
Then how to make our cities greener? From my point of view, first we should make people aware of the importance of making cities greener. Next, great efforts should be made to plant more trees, grasses and flowers. Meanwhile, we should carefully look after the planted trees, grasses and flowers and no one is allowed to destroy these plants. So long as we do so, we can certainly make our cities greener.
With industries and business developing quickly, the number of trees in many big cities has dramatically reduces. Efforts are being made to prevent people from cutting more trees. But a lot of trees are being destroyed by people who have never thought of the importance of green plants.Making cities greener has many advantages. First, it can make our air cleaner. Some researchers have proved that trees can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through absorption. Second, it can make our cities more beautiful. With trees and flowers everywhere, living conditions can be improved.
Finally, it can produce timber----an effective way to solve the problems of limited supply of natural resources.
Making our cities greener requires nationwide efforts. People in every field should not only know about the importance of keeping the quality of urban environment, but also take common action to plant more trees and flowers so as to improve our living conditions.

From the given chart, we are happy to see that there has been a continuous increase in the average public green land area, It was 2.96 square meters per capita in 1998, and 5 years later it rose to 9.16 square meters per capita. It’s really an amazing change, and the significance of the change is magnified by the fact that Shanghai today is known as a “Garden City”.
