If a free carbon atom were to form 2 covalent bonds with two free hydrogen atoms it has been calculated that about 1028KJ/mol of energy would be released.To promote a 2s electron in carbon to a 2p orbitals(excitation energy )and then to hybridise the 4 orbitals to give 4 sp3 hybrid orbitals (hybridisation energy)takes 405KJ/mol.This energy though is more than compensated for by the energy released on forming 4 covalent bonds,2057KJ/mol.Thus carbon forms compounds in which the carbon forms four rather than two bonds.
