north's three hearts is called a cue-bid raise.it shows at least a game-invita-tional limit raise with three or more spades.(this permits north with a weaker hand and four-card spade support to jump per-emptively to three spades).
south could see only three possible losers:one spade,one heart and one diamond(the finesse was probably losing).but instead of plowing on without further thought,he paused to consider if there was any danger.well,was there?definitely!there were only 11 high-card points missing,which west probably had for his two-level bid.and if east had a singleton heart,he was threatening to get a heart ruff when west got in with the spade ace.however,that would not be a problem if east ruffed only low hearts,declarer's natural loser.so south called for dummy's heart ace and played a trump.
west won and gave his partner a heart ruff,but declarer won the diamond shift with his ace and drew the missing trump.he lost only one spade,that ruff and a diamond.
note,though,that if south had taken the first trick with his heart king,he would have gone down.at trick three,east would have ruffed dummy's heart ace,establishing a heart trick for west.
