地坛公园是一座古朴幽雅、庄严肃穆的皇家坛庙园林,它占地43.1公顷,绿化面积25公顷,100余年以上的古树168株.公园的前身地坛,又称方泽坛,始建于明代嘉靖九年,即公元1530年,是明清两朝帝王祭地的场所,也是我国最大且是唯一现存的祭地之坛.1925年被辟为京兆公园,1957年改称地坛公园,1984年售票开放,现为市级一类公园.
公园现存有方泽坛、皇祗室、宰牲亭、斋宫、神库等多处古建.为保护这些优秀文化遗产,东城区园林局于95年投资30余万为古建大殿安装了防火保护神——烟感报警系统,并先后投入大量资金进行维修保护,特别是1999年完成对神马殿的居民搬迁和修缮,2000年又自筹资金200多万进行了钟楼复建和坛墙修复,为20世纪地坛文物古建保护工作划上一个圆满句号 .
经过多年建设,它已由过去衰败破落的祭祀坛庙发展成一座具有良好生态与景观效果的皇家园林.
方泽坛也称拜台,是帝王祭祀“皇地祗神”的坛台,它是地坛的主建筑,占地面积为一万七千六百八十九平方米,分为上下二层,这样宏伟宽敞的祭地之坛,不仅在中国,而且在世界上也是首屈一指的.方泽坛占地广大、体式壮阔,登临之上,令人念天地之悠悠,畅思绪于百代.
公园西门牌楼雄伟精巧,是北京最大的牌楼之一.它是根据清代乾隆时所建式样重新修建的,建设规模居北京市牌楼之最.绿色的琉璃瓦面,绘以单凤图、双凤图和牡丹图案,正面中心有地坛二字,背面核心有广厚街字样,是地坛公园的主要景点之一.
