Regardless of what decision she makes about her future,Lassila said she wanted to stay involved with the sport.''I'd like to be jumping in Sochi and I'd like to see these youngsters come up,'' she said.''I'd also like to be a part of developing our aerial program.''
A day after her gold-medal performance,Lassila was only starting to grasp what she had done.After four hours' sleep and with her husband Laurie watching on,the former gymnast could not stop smiling.
''I'm buzzing still,'' she said.''I'm pinching myself this morning.The girls were pinching me,too,my teammates,'Are you still Lyd?Are you still there?'''
It was a joke,but one that spoke also of something true.Things will never be the same for the 28-year-old from Melbourne's west.
It was a victory for her but also for the team and the discipline in Australia.''It's very strong and it's a well-oiled machine that really works,'' she said of an aerial skiing program that has delivered two gold medals in three Olympics and a medal at three successive games.''It has given us fantastic opportunities to be able to train where we want and have the best coaches.''
It was a victory also for a man hardly spoken about this week but who played a big part in Australia's latest winter Olympic medal:coach Michel Roth.''He was instrumental in developing my plan,'' she said.''I really just stuck to the plan and did my thing my way.Up until the very last moment it all worked according to the plan.''
There had been much written about coaching in the lead-up to the event,former coaches and old gripes were trotted out.But not much was written about Roth.
He has coached the past two Olympic champions in the women's event - Turin winner Evelyn Leu and Lassila.
Meanwhile,Australian figure skater Cheltzie Lee registered her highest score in international competition at the Vancouver Games on Thursday.There were a few nervous moments and a stumble in her free skating performance at the Pacific Coliseum,but the 16-year-old will walk away from the Games inspired after a stunning Olympic debut.Lee finished 20th but showed she had a bright future after being such a late call-up to the Games.
