We chose chitosan (CS) as the biopolymer with amino
groups and acrylic acid (AA) as the monomer with a car-
boxylic group.CS is a biocompatible and biodegradable bio-
polymer consisting of N-acetylglucosamine and glucosamine
units.[19] Its chemical structure is shown in Scheme 1.The mo-
lecular weight of the CS used here was 200 kDa,and the de-
gree of deacetylation was about 90 %.CS was dissolved in an
aqueous solution of acrylic acid with a stoichiometric molar
ratio of 1:1.1 ([glucosamine unit]/[acid]).The micellization of
CS±AA complexes in aqueous solution was investigated using
the fluorescent probe technique,with pyrene as the probe.It
has been reported that the (0,0) band in the excitation spectra
of pyrene shifts from 334 to 337 nm when micellization of the
amphiphilic polymers occurs above a certain minimum con-
centration in an aqueous pyrene solution.[20,21] The I337/I334
fluorescence intensity ratio was measured for different con-
centrations of CS±AA complex in aqueous solution (Fig.1),
and it was found to increase substantially above a CS±AA
concentration of 0.5 g L±1.
