In China, we have been influenced by Daoism and Confucianism to respect the elderly and cherish the young, so that we always give up our seats to elderly people and young children on buses, as part of China's traditional culture. Before I came to the U.S., I had visited Japan, where I once rode a very crowded subway, and saw a white-haired gentleman totter in. Out of sympathy, I immediately rose for him, but oddly he showed some displeasure rather than accepting my seat. Puzzled, I sought my friend for an explanation upon our return to the hotel. My friend smiled and told me that the Chinese and Japanese cultures had some differences: In China, giving up one's seat is seen as courtesy, but the Japanese believe it insults the elderly one's strength, which was why the man had been offended. It was then that I realized that cultural differences between us had led to a misunderstanding. In reality, sympathy does not help us understand people from other countries.
