While visiting the New York International Gift Fair we spotted these interesting bags at Los Angeles-based Poketo. Angie Myung, Poketos co-founder told us they were the work of EcoPartyMearry, a non-profit organization from South Korea. EcoPartyMearry formed a partnership with the Korean 2nd hand The Beautiful Store to transform donations they received into one-of-a-kind handcrafted discount designer handbags. EPM uses leather from old sofas and jackets and fabric from shirts and suit jackets in the construction of new bags. They also transform used outdoor advertising banners into cloth tote designer handbags. Each bag made is unique and bears a label noting what it was in a past life.
All proceeds from sales received by EcoPartyMearry go towards a social enterprise program to provide jobs to underemployed residents in South Korea. The company is also committed to environmental protection by looking for new ways to reduce the amount of waste destined for landfills.
Poketo is the first retailer in the US to offer EcoPartyMearry products.
