英文标识不仅仅是一种形式,而且具有积极的现实意义.地名作为人们在社会交往中使用最频繁、用途最广泛的工具之一,具有很高的社会价值.我市地名标识翻译的主要问题在于,对同一地点称谓的不统一,即便是同一部门所立的标牌上,对同一地名的翻译也不尽相同.目前,我市街头各种路牌的标识法,以及公交车站名的英文标识,花样百出,同样的地点,在不同的指示牌上的英译却不同.另外,市区主干道上的一些交通指示牌,其翻译的不统一、不规范也很常见.不同的指路牌对同一地名英文称谓不一致,更令人不解的是同一块标牌上,其英译所遵循的原则也不相同,同一条路的路名有两种甚至更多译法.“一路多名”、“一名多译”的现象使不少外国游客费解.如此,英语译文的指示作用就失去了其实际意义.产生这些现象的原因是,一方面,制作标示牌的部门之间缺乏沟通;另一方面,不同时间制作的标牌没有统一标准.
语言是文化的载体.语言的应用必须考虑到其文化内涵,否则就会对语义传达产生负面影响.例如市内公厕外墙壁上大多标有英文“W.C”字样.在英语文化环境中,“W.C.”类似中文所说“茅房、茅厕”,属于很不文雅的用法,更不应现身公众场合.这样的词汇的大量使用,必然使外国游客对我市各风景点的文化氛围产生质疑.此外,目前国内的一些通用汉语公示语在英语国家是找不到任何踪迹的.如男厕所中的“小便前站”,商店中的“商品售出,不退不换”,以及随处可见的“违者罚款”等.这些语言既缺乏对个体的人文关怀,又暗示我们的生活环境和服务质量不佳.如果对这些公示语直接进行翻译,非常容易引起外国游客的反感,这样的翻译便会成为文化误解的根源.
