2012年伦敦奥运会目前最大的资金缺口来自运动员村和主新闻中心,开发商兰德•利兹因为金融危机爆发,无法从银行获得更多贷款.尽管伦敦奥组委已将原来拥有4400个房间的运动员村缩减到2800个,并将气势恢宏的主新闻中心改成可拆卸的临时建筑,但资金缺口仍达4亿英镑,没有赞助商愿意出钱,只能由政府买单.
为了节约资金,伦敦奥组委已绞尽脑汁,包括决定让奥运会篮球比赛分在一新一旧两个场馆举行以节省开支,将游泳馆建设资金一刀切掉4000万英镑等,但依旧还是捉襟见肘.
