wait一般用作不及物动词,与某动作发生“迟”、“早”或“耽误”有关,意为“等；等候”.现就其用法简述如下：
一、wait可单独使用.例如：
Wait till the bus stops before getting off．等公共汽车停了再下车.
I can wait if you can't get there on time．如果你不能按时到这里,我可以等.
二、wait后接表示所等的人、物的名词或代词时,应与介词for连用.例如：
She is waiting for her mother．她正在等她妈妈.
They are waiting for the train．他们正在等火车.
三、wait后接表示目的的动词不定式.例如：
They are waiting to have dinner．他们正等着吃饭.
We are waiting to go there．我们等着去那里.
四、如果表示“等某人（物）进行某动作”,wait后不能接宾语从句,而应用wait for sb．（sth．）to do结构.例如：
Are you waiting for me to give back the book?你在等我还书吗?
The students are sitting quietly in the classroom and waiting for their new teacher to come in．学生们静静地坐在教室里,等候新老师的到来.
五、wait习惯上后接“and＋另一动词”,而不直接接动词不定式.例如：
Let's wait and see．让我们等着瞧.
六、表示“等到什么时间”,wait后的介词应用till／until,而不用to.例如：
We can wait till 10：00 a．m ．我们可以等到上午十点.
