On the fifteenth of June a famous ball was given in Brussels.Tickets were scarce, and Jos could not get one,but the rest of our friends were lucky enough to have invitations.
On the appointed night,George, having commanded new dress and ornaments of all sorts for Amelia, drove her to the ball, where his wife did not know a single person. After looking about ,and finding a seat for her,he left her there, thinking that he had behaved very well in getting her new clothes and bringing her.Nobody except Dobbin came to disturb her unhappy thoughts.
While Amelia’s appearance was a complete failure (as her husband felt with a sort of rage),Mrs.Rawdon Crawley’s entrance was,on the contrary, dazzling. She arrived very late. Her face was bright with pleasure, her dress perfect.Everyone looked at her.Numbers of the men, whom she knew already, crowded round her, begging for the honour of a dance. She said she was already engaged, and was going to dance very little, and make her way at once to the place where Amelia sat quite unnoticed and unhappy. And so,as a final triumph, she ran and greeted her dearest Amelia, and began to talk in a superior way.She criticized both her dress, and her hair. She declared it was a delightful ball, there was everybody one knew, and only a very few nobodies in ther room.

(Duchess of Richmond).
