说说我的看法：
此题 you are not familiar with 是定语从句,修饰 the matters.
如果按照你的看法,不去掉as,似应为原因状语从句.按照这种理解,在with后加 them,似乎也说的过去.此题考点显然在定语从句上

这是个定语从句，先行词是matters. 在从句中做with 的宾语。
不能把.as you are not familiar with当做一个时间状语从句，因为这样改过来后，句子就不完整了，with 后面少了个宾语。就变成了错误的句子。with 后面加个them 指matters. 勉强可以了。
