groping不是你理解的现在进行时,现在进行时是be+doing,你看一看这个and后面有be动词吗?没有的,这里不是现在进行时.那为什么会有groping呢?那是因为这里的groping是和前面的choking,coughing并列的.三个动词都用ing形式是为了表示动作的同时性.但是前两个动作都是coughing,choking都是气管的动作（咳嗽等）,后面的groping是手的动作,这里要添上hand要不然大家会误解这个groping也是和coughing,choking是一个发出的呢.但是其实不是这样的,所以才要把hand加上.至于为什么没有was就像我刚才解释的the other man suddenly woke up,coughing and choking,his hands groping for the button that would bring the nurse running这是一个句子,一个句子中是不能出现两个谓语动词的.要是用was或者groped就和前面的woke冲突了.
第二个问题
在这个that从句中已经有了谓语动词bring你还要加would be首先句意不合,其次语法也不对.同样是一个句子出现了多个谓语动词的问题.记住,在一个句子中有且只有一个谓语动词除非它里面包含了从句,从句中也有且只有一个谓语动词.bring sb doing sth是有这个结构的.
