No surprise that the 650i comes laden with masses of equipment in return for its $205,000 price tag. All the expected luxury and safety gear is there and it's high quality stuff. But BMW also adds some more exclusive items like a head-up display that splashes the speed and the occasional warning message onto the windscreen.
Under the bonnet
Four Half Star
The 650i was launched late last year to replace the 645Ci, the badge change denoting a rise in the V8 engine's capacity from 4.4 to 4.8-litres. With that comes an extra 25kW and 40Nm. This is a great engine, managing to combine smoothness and civility with instant and sustained response. A key contributor to this is the ZF six-speed auto that will shift in standard or performance modes, or can be operated semi-manually. For all the go, the 650i also returns manageable fuel economy, not that buyers of this car will be to concerned about that!
How it drives
Four Star
The chassis fundamentals are pretty close to the current 5 Series, so on-road behavior is both confidence- and grin-inspiring. The 650i has Active Steering that makes it easy to manoeuvre. It then weights up as speeds climb on the open road. The Dynamic Drive active sway bar system also reduces roll in corners and aids the ride. Speaking of which, the Bridgestone run-flat tyres do affect ride quality, but not as badly as some other BMWs we have sampled recently.
Comfort and practicality
Three Star
For front seat passengers this is a very comfortable car, with big, pamerping and highly adjustable seats. There is also more than adequate boot space for suitcases and golf clubs. The downside is limited rear head and legroom and a lack of storage options for things like phones, CDs and the like.
Safety
Four Star
Has a long and impressive list of active and passive safety aids. Being a BMW it should also be structurally sound, although we could find no independent crash test data. No doubt, it's hard to justify spending $205,000 to run one car into a wall!
