苏州河,又称吴凇江,全长125千米,是上海黄浦江最大的支流.100年前,苏州河河水清澈,鱼虾成群.当时的租界当局为建造自来水厂选址,曾对苏州河、黄浦江、定山湖水质进行采样,并将样本送到英国分析,结果发现苏州河的水质最好.然而好景不长,第一次世界大战期间,苏州河两岸的工业和人口迅速发展和增长,大量生活污水和生产废水排入苏州河,到1920年,苏州河水开始出现黑臭.尽管每个水体都有与生俱来的自净能力,只要有足够的清水和流速,就能使水中的污染物质降解或稀释,然而苏州河却是一条清水少、流速小的河流,自净能力极茶,随着两岸工厂增多,居民聚居,大量工业废水和生活污水排向河中,以致河中的污水已远远超过清水,因此河水越来越脏,污染日趋严重.
