Farmers are paying $1000.per megalitre of water to irrigate their vines which will then increase the price of grapes,estimated at $600 to $1200 per tonne which equates to an average of $1.40p/L for the grapes not including wine making costs.Due to drought and the willingness of dairy farmers to pay up to $5000 per megalitre of water,a lot of farmers have permanently sold their water and left their vines to die.It is predicted that wine / grape prices will dramatically increase for at least the next two years.I have looked on the bulk listings and Cab Sav starts at around $3.00 plus freight as these wineries are situated on the other side of Australia.
Our situation is - we have water,we have 23,000 Litres of Cab Sav and smaller quantities of wine suitable for sweet red and white.If we are offered a reasonable price for these we will sell as bulk or (export) or we will use them for our local market next year and sell our grapes to the larger wineries that can afford to pay these premium prices.
We have had alot of enquiries for wine to export to China so I presume these people that are not yet in the market are unable to purchase wine at their desired price.
We would be very happy to continue our business relationship but being a small winery we also need to consider the high demand .
