Um, On November 15th, 2000, Peter Taylor gave me the greatest honor of my career in ****** me captain of England and fulfilling my childhood dream. Now almost six years later, having been captain for 58 of my 95 caps, I feel the time is right to pass on the armband as we enter into a new era under Steve McClaren. It has been an honor and a privilege to have captained their country and I want to stress that I wish to continue to play for England and look forward to helping both the new captain and Steve McClaren in any way I can.
I came to this decision some time ago, but I had hoped to announce it on the back of a successful World Cup. Sadly, that wasn't meant, that wasn't to be. This decision has been, has been the most difficult of my career to date. But after discussing it with my family and the closest to me, I feel it the time is right. Our performance during this World Cup has not been enough to progress further, and both myself and all the players regret that and are hurt, and are hurt by that more than people realize. Footballer David Beckham will take his first major acting role in movie Goal in which he will play himself.
Directed by Judge Dredd film-maker Danny Cannon Goal is due to be released in August 2005 as part of a ￡100m film trilogy.
"I want to be involved in youth coaching when I finally hang up my boots. I believe that the Goal trilogy will provide a positive message to kids around the world.〃 Beckham said.
The England captain previously played himself in numerous television adverts and has appeared in football documentary films.
Goal will also feature appearances by Manchester United player Wayne Rooney Newcastle United’s Alan Shearer and Beckham’s fellow Real Madrid players Ronaldo and Zidane.
The trilogy will follow a Los Angeles footballer played by Y Tu Mama Tambien star Diego Luna as his career takes him to Real Madrid via Newcastle United.
Co-produced by Milkshake Filmsthe final instalment was planned to hit cinema screens in time for the 2006 World Cup. Agencies
