Fourth-grde teacher Elisabeth Beckwith wants her students at Fernbank Elementary School in Decatur,Georgia,to pay attention to a lesson on Greek mythology.Instead of the classroom,the kids are lying on the floor near their desks practicing yoga.It is fun ,say 9-year-old Jack Besser.It makes us relaxed after we've been sitting for an hour.Besser's classmate Medha Prakash says it helps her to concentrate .It makes me feel relaxed and it gets all the stress out of me.
It is a fun way for them to think about things,Beckwith says.You know,it is healthy for them,too.I use yoga poses to teach mythology.
Beckwith and other teachers at the school stsrted offering yoga in the classroom two years ago.They learnt yoga from Yoga Kids International .Then they went to teach kids in school.
At Fernbank Elementary School,yoga is also being used in PE classes throghout the day.PE teacher Katie Bashor says,If you say you're going to do yoga with the kids,they start concentrting at once.
Feom the kindergarten through fifth grade,students are learning to use deep breathing and basic yoga at their desks.The teachers say this can help kids get stress out of them before taking tests.School Headmaster June Neal said,We've seen kids have improved their test points and test-taking skills beecomes less after yoga.
