Spring Festival, which is the Chinese New Year, is coming soon. To every Chinese, that is the most important and solemn day, during which people will happily celebrate it in different ways. As children, they all immerse in the gaiety of happy hours, not just because they can wear brand-new clothes and shoes, but also they can receive lucky money that is the principal source of pocket money all through the year. Lucky money is a kind of gift, in terms of money wrapped with red envelopes, which adults and elders give to represent their wishes of good luck, health and progress to children. Hence, every child hopes to gain as much lucky money as possible during the Spring Festival.
As a little boy, like other children, I naturally hoped to receive the red envelopes with money, because I could spend it on toys, snacks, books or anything I like. It was absolutely delighted to me every time I unfolded the red envelopes and counted the money inside, but except one time when I was twelve. That was a really bad memory which ruined my whole new year.
It was nine years ago. Father was promoted to be head-manager in his firm at the end of the year, so it should have been a very wonderful Spring Festival. But on the eve of the New Year, a guest to my home spoiled the festive atmosphere completely.
Spring Festival Eve is the time when everyone was busy cleaning houses and purchasing fresh foods for the New Year, so it was unusual that a guest visited someone’s home. Unfortunately, such things took place in my family.
It was half past nine in that morning. Mr. Lee came to my house, bringing lots of cookies and fruits as gifts. Since he came, Father had to attend to him, and had a conversation with him in the living room. Just then I helped Mother to sweep the floor; I was going out to get some water and was caught by Mr. Lee.
“Haven’t seen you for a long time, how have you been recently, Haomin?” asked enthusiastically Mr. Lee.
I had to stop and replied: “I am good, but busy with the housework.”
“Wow, a good boy. I like such guys; children should share housework with their parents, right? ” said Mr. Lee, “To praise you, I will give you some lucky money.” He took a red envelope out of his suit and gave to me.
“Thank you so much, Mr. Lee.” I accepted the envelope, and went back to my room.
Wow, the red envelope was so thick that I could hardly wait to unfold it. It was 500Yuan (RMB)!!! And that was too much to be offered as lucky money. However, I didn’t realize that. Contrarily, I was pretty excited and began to think about how to use the money. First of all I intended to buy the car model I had wished to possess for a long time. As soon as the idea came to my mind, I withdrew some of the money from the envelope and galloped down to the department store immediately.
After twenty minutes, I got my favorite car model and came back home. Mr. Lee was still in the living room and was talking with Father. I put my car model in my room, and at this moment, I heard the conversation between Father and Mr. Lee.
“Congratulations on your promotion. You are really an outstanding leader. I think under your enlightened leadership your company will be better and better! ” said Mr. Lee.
“I hope so; thank you very much.” said Dad.
“Since you are the head-manager in your company, so, could you do me a favor?” asked Mr. Lee. “My wife is still out of job; can you offer her a job in your company? Any job is ok, I believe, she doesn’t care. ”
“Anyone who wants to get a position in my company must take a test and then we will interview some excellent candidates according to the results of the test.” responded Dad.
“You know, my wife is from the countryside and she didn’t receive any good education before. So can you cancel the test for her? ” pleaded Mr. Lee.
“Err….I suppose I can’t. There are many candidates, how can I do that? ” said Dad.
“Please, Mr. Cen, please help me. My wife really hopes to join in your company. Please give her a job.”
At that time Mum was asking me in the kitchen: “Haomin, where have you been? Your work is not done. Help me sweep the floor of the living room.”
I answered loudly in my room: “I just now went out to buy my favorite car model; I am coming to help you.”
“How could you get money?” asked Mom.
“I used the lucky money Mr. Lee gave me.” I was on the hallway to the kitchen and living room.
“I have told you before, you have to talk to me when you use the lucky money." scolded Mom.
“I know, but I really like the model. I can’t wait! ”
Mr. Lee heard my words and said to me, “Well done! Take good use of that money to buy anything you like. I appreciate it. ”
Father looked angry too, and ordered, “Don’t waste the money on such toys. You are not a little kid any more.”
I could say nothing but apologize: “I am sorry, Dad.” I was thinking, “Am I wrong?” I was very confused, because Father and Mother never lost their temper like that on the eve of New Year before.
After ten minutes, Mr. Lee left. Father ordered me to give the lucky money back to him. I was quite reluctant but had to do so. Also Father was rather startled about the amount of money---500Yuan, oh, no; it was already 400 when he saw the red envelope. Father looked pale and was at a loss what to do.
“What’s wrong, Dad?” I asked.
“Mr. Lee asked me to offer his wife a job exempt from any tests and interviews; and all the gifts and lucky money are used as the pressure pushing on me!” said Father, “since you used the lucky money , that means I have to grant his request--- to exempt his wife from tests and interviews and offer her a job. How can I do that? That is not fair to other candidates.”
Having heard what Father said, I understood why Mr. Lee appreciated it if I used the money. After that, I realized, firstly, not all the lucky money represented best wishes to children; secondly, I was used by Mr. Lee via the lucky money to force Father to grant his request. (I was too childish to know that when I just got the money.)
Since the Spring Festival was drawing near, Father couldn’t deal with that lucky money right away. Consequently, a dim atmosphere covered my family. Eventually, my twelfth Spring Festival in my life was spoiled in that way!
