Singapore,officially the Republic of Singapore,is an island country off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula,137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator,south of the Malaysian state of Johor and north of Indonesia's Riau Islands.
Singapore is the world's fourth leading financial centre,[9] and its economy is often ranked among the world's top ten most open,[10] competitive[11] and innovative.[12][13] The country is also a highly cosmopolitan world city,with a key role in international trade and finance.
Singapore has a diverse populace of 5 million people made up of Chinese,Malays,Indians,Asians and Caucasians of various ethnic origins.[14] The populace of Singapore has the sixth-highest percentage of foreigners in the world.42% of the population are foreigners,and these make up 50% of the service sector.[15][16] The country is the second most densely populated in the world after Monaco.[17] A.T.Kearney names Singapore as the most globalised country in the world in its Globalization Index.[18][19]
Even before independence in 1965,Singapore was one of the richest states in East Asia due to its strategic location as a port.Singapore's GDP per capita in 1965 was $511,the third highest in East Asia after Japan and Hong Kong.[20] After independence,foreign direct investment into Singapore and a state-led drive for industrialization based on plans by Dr Goh Keng Swee created a modern economy focused on industry,education and urban planning.[21]
Today,the port of Singapore continues to be among the top five busiest ports in the world.[22][23] The World Bank ranks Singapore as the world's top logistics hub.[24]
Singapore enjoys a very high standard of living.The Economist Intelligence Unit in its "Quality-Of-Life Index" ranks Singapore as having the best quality of life in Asia and eleventh overall in the world.[25] Mercer in its "Quality of Living Survey 2010" ranks Singapore as the best Asian city to live in over its nearest competitor,Tokyo.[26]
Singapore is the fourth wealthiest country in the world in GDP (PPP) per capita terms,and twentieth wealthiest in terms of GDP (nominal) per capita.Despite Singapore's relatively small physical size,the country has the world's ninth largest foreign reserves.[27][28] The Singapore Armed Forces are the most technologically advanced and well-equipped in the region.[29][30][31]
