Topic:
“Learning is primarily a matter of personal discipline; students cannot be motivated by
school or college alone.”
Learning is an important activity for every human in our modern civilization. It’s ubiquitous throughout the daily life ever since the birth and develops into advanced forms as formal education steps in.By learning one improve himself, diagnose fault and progress. It’s obvious that nobody would disagree the indispensability of learning, but whether learning is primarily a self triggered or school motivated activity is an interesting question to consider.
To believe the college education is the only way to enhance learning is definitely not strict and is even antipodally wrong in certain circumstances. The baby never attends any institution and obtains all its learning from its childish observation and imitation, from its parents and environment. Its language capability developed is simply not the product of any language school as the baby never took the associated entrance exam.As one grows up,more convincing facts show:innumerous students nominally studying at school but fail to learn, indicated by their low GPA indices and their aversion to study and learning. On the other hand, countless scholars of great knowledge emerged over the history, who has none or little formal school training. The reason behind is not the academic affiliation, but their personal aspiration as well as perseverance as the implementer of learning is one self.Benjamin Franklin, the famous politian and productive scientist, obtains his learning mostly by his voracious reading as in his time no systematic education had been established yet and he is actually the one who created such a formal education.
The school education,if not properly guided can sometime even bring negative effect on learning, especially when, for instance,an over emphasize on exam grades without really caring about the knowledge acquisition or a blind and passive recitation by thoughtless remembrance, are prevalent and advocated.Students enrolled in such schools would hardly learn as the anxiety of grades has overwhelmed the gist of knowledge accumulation.
While the school education is not the sufficient impulse for learning,it has benefited learning in a overall sense.A formal and scientific education methodology helps intrigue the curiosity of students for learning,it guides students into the ocean of knowledge and most importantly assures students the power of knowledge and nurture their sound love for learning. The learning is inherently personal, however, exterior excitement would never hurt if not help,as long as such excitement sits on the resonance of the specific student personality.
At school, students are forced to finish homework assignments as well as to pass exams. This uncomfortable and tough training process impels everyone to learn hard even if reluctantly. After all,the school is an informal alias for studying and learning, what consists the life wherein will be predominant learning and just because of this environment, students will get the sense and practice the process of learning subconsciously.
In sum,the school education is not a sufficient part for learning as learning is inherently personal by its performer (the learner),although colleges could help the process of learning when properly implemented. With an ill-planned coursework system and one’s own indolence, school could ruin a student, with a formal and well-guided education, school might have its proudest alumni, without any school life but an unremitting chracter, one might become the greatest of all time.(571 words)
