he Dragon Boat Festival is one of important and ancient festivals in china. It is on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month every year. The Dragon Boat Festival originated from the War Period of China and it has a history of more than 2000 years.
As to the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, there are many different viewpoints, such as in memory of Wuzixu, a famous person in the War Period; in memory of Cao’e, a filial daughter in the period of Donghan; and so on. But in all of stories of the Dragon Boat Festival, the one about memory Quyuan is most famous. Quyuan was a very patriot and litterateur. He wrote many distinguished writings, such as , , and so on. He very cared his country and was dissatisfied with the government, so he felt very disconsolate. In 278 BC, his country was invaded by the Qing, he mourned and despaired for his country, so he jumped into the river and passed away.
After Quyuan suicided, the local people were very sorrowful, and they memorized him by many ways, which became many different customs afterward in China. The most famous customs are the racing dragon boats, wrapping Zongz, and hanging costmary on the door. Here I will introduce these three customs briefly.
Firstly: racing dragon boats.
It was said that after Quyuan jumped into the river, the local people rowed boats to save him. They were very hurried but they didn’t find him. Since then, at the time of every year, people got the habit of rowing boat that was made as a dragon backward. Gradually racing dragon boats became a custom and today it also became a popular sport activity in many places of the world.
Secondly: wrapping Zongz.
Zongz is a glutinous rice dumpling wrapped with reed leaves into a shape of Pyramid. It was said people wrapped Zongz and threw it into the river. By doing so, the fish in the rival could eat the Zongz and they didn’t eat the body of Quyuan. Today, Zongz has been one of traditional Chinese food.
Thirdly: hanging costmary on the door.
Hanging costmary on the door is also an import custom on 5th May by lunar calendar. In that day morning, every family always hangs a bundle of costmary on their door. They believe the costmary can ward off the deceases and evil spirits.
Of course, there are many others customs about the Dragon Festival. The three I mentioned just are the most important. Today, the Dragon Festival has been a world festival, in many places oversea, especially in the place where there are many Chinese, the Dragon Festival is very popular. Now the Dragon Festival not only is in memory of Quyuan but also spreads the culture of China and promotes the friendship between Chinese people and the other counties’ people over the world.
