What is management and how does it impact on an organization?
In modern society, it is widely believed that effective management is important for companies. It is claimed that management deeply impacts on organizations. Henri Fayol (1966), French, considered management consisting of seven functions: planning, organizing, leading, coordinating, controlling, staffing and motivating. This essay will discuss how management impact on an organization under four sections : define of management; four effects on management of an organization are planning, leading, staffing and motivating with famous example.
First of all, there are two major definitions in term of management. The first definition by the management authority Peter Drucker (1969) defined this as:‘ Organization and coordination of the activities of an enterprise in accordance with certain policies and in achievement of clearly defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials, and money.’ Another definition pointed out that:‘ Directors and managers have the power and responsibility to make decisions to manage an enterprise. As a discipline, management comprises the interlocking functions of formulating corporate policy and organizing, planning, controlling, and directing the firm's resources to achieve the policy's objectives. ‘ (Wikipedia, 2008)
There are four key areas in management which affect organizations. These are: planning, leading, staffing and motivating.
To begin with, planning is important because it establishes the companies’ strategies for the future. This affects the structure of an organization, because it has an integral effect on that. Plan is significant because it influences an organization in terms of performance. Furthermore, if the plan includes specific actions and demands, it will affect the strategy of the organization. In fact, managers often plan different tasks for different employees that affect the structure of the organization. For example, companies will plan how much turnover they should make in current year, and then management departments will lay down a strategy that will help the turnover be actualized, as the same time the HR management departments will decide the position for every staff. The Staffing affects the human resource of the organization. The term human resources refer to all the human efforts, skills and capabilities that an organisation requires to be able to operate into the long term. (Mullins, 2007) In fact, everyone is all unique and has own way of looking at and solving problem. So whoever is hired will affect average level of whole organization’s human resources. The leading affects the way of communication and performance in an organization. Different leadership affects the way of organizational communication which information is transmitted and exchanged throughout an organization. For example, democratic style leadership will use two-ways communication, but Autocratic style only uses downward communication. (Hall, D, 2006, p147) The manager who uses autocratic style will get good performance, because he alone exercises decision making and authority. Organization will have more ideas but will have lower effective, when managers use laissez-faire leadership. (Hall, D, 2006, p147) The motivation affects spirit in organization. Motivation will maintain morale and build organization spirit, it will lead employees work hard effectively.
The below cases shows management impact on an organization
‘In 2001 Jeremy Silver joined a company that produces writing music on computers. He spent his first three months developing a three year plan. Perhaps as a result, in 2002 he was appointed chief executive and amalgamated the London and Cambridge offices of the business in London. Jeremy thinks he had to tread carefully. Jeremy have gained the confidence of the owners and had to win over the staff. Jeremy spent time with everybody individually and did fix slots with every member of staff. Additionally, he set company meeting time at every Monday at 10am. Plan an open door policy which ensures that people can just walk into office and communication with manager. The business has also started pension and health care schemes to tell employees ‘we believe in you’. (Hall, D, 2006, p158)
From this case study, Jeremy Silver does the planning, motivation, leading and staffing for the organization. “Jeremy Silver creates a plan for three years that changed the structure of the organization, his leading is sensitive and changeable leadership, the confidence of leadership causes employees to believe organization.” Jeremy Silver assigned job for every staff and communicate with every employee, which made them clearly know what they should do and which level they were in the organization. Jeremy controlled the meeting time of organization and laid down ‘open door policy’, leading to the company into an orderly organization. Every member of staff in the company would feel safe and belonging, because they all had pension and health care.
In conclusion, management affects organization in four ways which are planning, leading, staffing and motivating. That will impact on major ways that is organization of leadership, structure, strategy and performance. But, under the global management, the meaning of management will cover wider range and the impact on organization will be deeper.
