Despite the UK having emerged from the economic recession with now four consecutive quarters
of positive GDP growth, the prospects for the retail market remain fragile and challenging.
Following the Government’s Spending Review last month,it is clear that many households look set
to have a tough 2011 as a result of proposed public sector job cuts and rising VAT.Consumer
caution is returning as people are bracing themselves for a further hit to their disposable income.
The predicted drop in consumer expenditure will, once again, put a strain on retailer margins, with
the likely impact being that administrations will rise over the next 12 months. This would inevitably
lead to an increase in vacant units in high streets and shopping centres across the country and
begs the question:should we build any more retail foorspace when there are so many existing
units left empty?
