quality goods and services,and it must achieve high productivity of its resources.Most
references to productivity at a national level refer to labor productivity.A nation’s labor
productivity is its total output of goods and services during a year,divided by the total
hours worked by the nation’s entire work force during that year.Productivity growth per
year expresses the rate at which the productivity is improving.
Obviously managers face a challenge to improve quality while they also work to
improve productivity.Labor productivity reflects only part of the productivity picture,
particularly as automation is becoming more common and provides more opportunities to
substitute capital for labor.Total factor productivity is the ratio of the output to a
measure of all the resources used to achieve the output.Managers must wisely manage the
use of materials,capital,energy,and all resources.Peter Drucker has stated that
“making resources productive is the specific task of management.”Again.productivity is
broader than just achieving the greatest output per WOl‘ke r hour.It means bahmcing all
factors of production so that the grcatest output is achieved for a given total input of
resources.
The achievement of high quality is closely related to productivity.It is definitely not
