The degree provides a balance between the natural and social sciences, integrating a range of subject material to provide a sound foundation for employment in a broad range of environmental jobs. You may opt to maintain breadth during the whole degree or to specialise in particular aspects of the environment such as policy development, conservation or managing the environment/society interface. We have a strong tradition for practical and fieldwork learning and, in addition to specialist laboratory facilities, including GIS, we make extensive use of the University’s field station at Bayfordbury.

First Year The balance between natural and social science provides a broad base from which you can specialize in the second and final years. Modules include sustainable development, biodiversity, human space and society and there is a residential fieldcourse early in the first term to introduce field skills and interdisciplinary approaches to studying the environment.
Second Year This begins with a fieldcourse currently held in the Swiss Alps. Students take modules in ecology, global change and can choose options such as fundamentals of geospacial information and rural development and change. The second year also includes a research design module to provide the knowledge and understanding to deliver your personal final year project.

Sandwich Year/Study Abroad You are encouraged to undertake either a year of study abroad by choosing to study your degree ‘with a year in Europe’ or ‘with a year in North America’, or to take a year’s work placement. Although these are optional, you are likely to benefit greatly in terms of maturity, the class of degree you achieve, and future employability. Training is provided in the second year. Recent work placements have included water quality monitoring with a local water authority, research assistants in Environment Agency and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, research in an environmental consultancy, habitat conservation work for the National Trust, teaching assistant in environmental education centres and many others.
Final Year Your individual research project is key part of the final year, with in-depth study of a topic relevant to your degree. Final year specialised topics include environmental audit and legislation, approaches to waste management, methods of monitoring the environment, countryside recreation and tourism, habitat management and conservation, advanced GISci.

Careers We provide employer-relevant education and integrate such skills into the curriculum. Our graduates are successful in finding employment in specialist areas related to their degree as well as a wide range of other careers. Recent graduates have gone into employment in waste management, wildlife trusts, environmental consultancies, teaching at primary and secondary level, local authorities, the Environment Agency, wildlife trusts, research institutes and many, many more.
