A Hi,B,how is you weekend?
B Kind of good,only I have to spend most of the time on English vocabulary.That sucks.How’s yours?
B Fantastic!But let’s talk about it later.It seems like you don’t enjoy your English study at all.How is that?
A No,it’s not I don’t t enjoy it at all.it Just,I hate memorize new words,especially some of the vocabulary are so odd that I may never use them,like phaseolotoxin (菜豆丁香假单胞杆菌毒素),who’s gonna need it if he’s not majored in pharmaceutic?
B yeah,that makes sense.I don’t like those too.But I do enjoy study English.Especially when I have chance to talk to someone who use English as their first language,l’d love to hear the compliments from them.I feel so confident and it makes me like studying English even better.
C walks in and joins the conversation.
C hey,guys.How’s your weekend?
B Good.We were talking about A’s English issue just now.
C yeah?What was it?
A it’s not a big deal.I just don’t like memorize English words.It’s kind of driving me crazy.
C I totally understand.But you got to think more about the pros other than cons.I mean it’s pretty obviously that we’ll have to use it all the time in the future.No matter how good the translations are,we’re not able to understand the essence from it.It’s like we only get second hand information.It’s OK when we were high school student,but I don’t think it enough for undergraduate level.I think D has some idea since he always shows his enthusiastic on learning English.

C we were talking about learning English.You like it very much,don’t you?
D I sure do.It’s like I’m exploring a brand new culture,and English is the key.It is really interesting if we looking into it.For example,I found that English is a language that usually involved with innovative events.People prefer English when they came up with a new theory or technology.For instance,in Europe nation like Sweden and Italy,published papers were mostly in English even their first language were French and Italian respectively.I even heard that Catholic Church once tried to ban English since too many scientist use English to write revolutionary paper and it threaded their authority.
B so you like it because its history.
D not really only the history.When I found there were several ways of the same meaning,I found it interesting,just like our dialect to mandarin.So why you are talking about this,I thought learning English is part of our life that nobody doubt.
A it’s me,I have problem of vocabulary.But I think it’s OK,because I feel like I’m not gonna need it in the future anyway.
B how is that?
A Most of the chance,I will major in arts,like design or painting.I guess high school level is enough for me.
