Before having interviews with clients, I thought that interview means having conversation with others and so I get to know them. After three interviews done now, I changed my opinion to it and there are some of my strengths and weaknesses. For each interview, I had a good introduction. I introduced myself, explained the purpose of doing the interviews and explained the process and setting of the interview. Appropriate body language was given during the interviews such as smiling and nodding. Eye contact was always maintained while I was talking with the clients. By showing those proper body language, I showed my respect to them and encourage them to talk with me. I spoke gently and warmly and so they did not feel nervous, but my caring and friendly. Every times, I closed my interviews by saying appreciation of their sharing stories with me and their precious advice for improving my upcoming interviews.
Through communicating with the clients and getting feedback from my colleagues and clients, I improved a lot. At the first interview, I noticed that how I was nervous to communicate and what impression I left to my client. The client noticed I was not confident enough. When I was doing my second and third interview, I tried my best to relax by practicing my introduction and taking deep breath. By doing these, I was more calm and confident to interview my following clients. The felt my confidence, friendliness, interest and caring during the interviews. With feedback from my second client, I noticed that I needed to speak up and pronounce more clearly. Thus, I practiced my questions and focused with my pronunciation with practicing introduction so that my clients can understand my introduction and my questions. Meanwhile, I noticed I have better paying attention on information that clients mentioned so that I can extract questions from that. Therefore, clients can feel my understanding on their concerns and my interest.
I did learn a lot from these interviews and feedbacks. I know that it is not just a conversation with patients in any clinical setting.I have to pay attention on what they are talking about so I can ask questions about them and they feel my interest and my understanding. I have to maintain appropriate body language to show my respect, encouragement and caring so that patients feel they are encouraged and they want to talk with me.
