Good afternoon, everyone!
The topic of my speech today is “My Attitude to Pursuit of Fashion in School”.
Now in our school there is a hot pursuit of fashion. Some students live a very expensive life. They have hairstyles like those of famous stars and wear top brand of clothes and shoes. Some use expensive mobile phones.
Personally, I understand why they do so. Firstly, they hope to look smart and special. Secondly, they highly value others’ respect and recognition. In addition, it makes them feel cool.
In my opinion, we students should hold the right values. It is how we behave rather than how we appear that makes us cool. It is what achievements we have made rather than what brand we are wearing that makes us respectable. It is how much we care for others rather than how much we spend on gifts and luxuries that make us charming. I think it will make great sense to save the money to help those who still can’t make ends meet.
Thank you for listening!

Text 1
M: Is your phone out of order? I tried to call you last night, but I couldn’t get through.
W: Oh, I was on the phone all night. Sorry about that.
Text 2
M: Have you taken Professor Young’s exam before? I’m kind of nervous.
W: Yes. Just concentrate on the important ideas she’s talked about in class, and ignore the details.
Text 3
M: Mrs. Smith just called to say that she cannot come today because something unexpected has come up.
W: Oh no! I’ve just declined Mary’s invitation! Anyway, I guess we’ll have to put off the meeting until later.
Text 4
W: Did you see Betty today?
M: Yes. When I went to the bank this morning, we happened to meet outside. She said she was going to the post office. Why?
W: We agreed to meet in the school café at 3 p.m., but she hasn’t turned up yet.
Text 5
M: I’m so worried I’m going to do the wrong thing.
W: Just take it easy, Jimmy. I’m sure everything will be fine.
M: I hope so. I need the job.
W: When you meet the boss, the most important thing is to look him in the eye, smile, and shake
hands.
Text 6
M: Let’s take a coffee break, shall we?
W: I wish I could, but I can’t.
M: What keeps you so busy? You’ve been sitting there for hours. You’ve got to walk around. You can’t just stay on computer forever.
W: Well, I’m up to my neck in work. I’ve got to finish this report. Sarah needs it by noon. I don’t want to be scolded if I can’t finish my work by the deadline.
M: I understand that, but you’d feel better if you took a break, even for just a short while. Then you’re sure to work more efficiently.
Text 7
W: Now Mr. Hardy, has the situation changed since last night?
M: No. Mrs. Hamilton is still refusing to talk to us. We’d like her to come out peacefully. The police don’t want to charge her, but …
W: Well, it’s her home.
M: But nobody else refused to move. You see, we’re going to build over 300 flats in this area in place of the shabby houses. Families are expecting to move into them next year! It’s all being delayed because of one person!
W: But Mrs. Hamilton was born in that house.
M: Of course. But we have promised to give her a modern flat immediately, a very nice flat for an elderly person living alone.
W: So, what will happen next?
M: I don’t know, but we can’t wait forever. The police will have to do something soon.
Text 8
W: I understand how you feel, sir. But there simply isn’t any room. The person who received your reservation call must have forgotten to write it down. I’m afraid it was just a mistake. She is new, you know.
M: Just a mistake? Do you realize that I’ve invited some very important people to dinner? It could cause me to lose an important business partner.
W: I’m sorry, sir. I suggest you call them and explain the problem. I’m sure you’ll find several other very good restaurants around here.
M: I can’t get in touch with them now. They are probably on their way at this very minute. Surely you could fit one more table in.
W: Not unless you’d like me to put you in the hall, sir.
M: Well, that’s better than nothing.
Text 9
W: Jim, thank goodness, you’ve arrived! The class presentation started half an hour ago, and I was
just beginning to panic.
M: I’m sorry I’m late, Ellen. I was out of luck this morning. I didn’t think I was going to make it
here at all.
W: Why are you so late? Our whole presentation depends on those graphs you’re holding.
M: Yes, I know. I’ll tell you about it later. First let’s see... Two groups are still ahead of us, aren’t
they? That means I’ve got about twenty minutes to rest.
W: You do look tired. What happened?
M: I’ve been standing outside for over an hour waiting for a bus.
W: Over an hour! I thought your apartment was only a ten-minute bus ride to school.
M: Under the normal condition, yes, but the bus was delayed. And when I went to call home for a
ride, the bus passed by. Unfortunately, there was no one at home. So I had to wait another
forty-five minutes for the next bus.
W: Just out of luck! Well, we’d better stop talking. People are turning around and looking at us.
