To offset the uncertainty surrounding TMT selection,Williamson (2000) suggests that new venture founders seek advice from those nearest to them and search for successful models to learn from.Indeed,a recent study by Williamson and Cable (2003) lends empirical support to the proposition that founders tend to select TMT members from sources with whom they share network ties,and thatTMThiring patterns appear to be shaped by mimetic isomorphism.These results further support DiMaggio and Powell (1983) assertion that,when faced with ambiguity,firms look to the actions of other organizations in search of models that can be used to find viable solutions to their problems.In this vein,it is expected that founders of universitybased start-ups will turn to university incubator and technology park staff for hiring advice,select a disproportionate number of TMT members from the university community,and model the TMT composition of their neighboring university-based firms.As a result,it can be expected that TMTs of university-based startups will be more homogeneous in terms of important characteristics such as education,industry experience,functional expertise and skills than their independent counterparts.Below,we outline more precisely why TMT heterogeneity in terms of these characteristics is likely to vary between university-based and independent start-ups.
