His body was made of pure gold and his eyes of sparkling sapphire. On the hilt of his sword also lies a big ruby that shines away brightly. In order to help the poor, he got the swallow to give his pure gold body and precious stones to them. The starving people rejoiced for they received happiness and warmth. The swallow loved the Happy Prince dearly and it didn't fly off as Winter approached. In the end, it was frozen to death. On the other hand, the Happy Prince's statue was removed for it no longer had a gold body and precious stones on it. The people tried to melt the statue but they found that a heart that they couldn't melt. The angels from Heaven descended and took the Happy Prince and the swallow to Heaven.
The first word that I thought of was devotion after I finished the story. Both the Happy Prince and the swallow are so selfless. The Happy Prince, in particular, abandoned all his riches so as to help the poor and hungry while the swallow rather stay during the cold winter to lend him a hand and aid those people. From them, I learn that such a kind of dedication requires selfless love from some one.

Look at the world and we'll realise that there are a lot of people who resemble the Happy Prince and the swallow. They are the people who have been dedicating their lives to a particular cause silently. One example would be our parents. They have been working hard on a daily basis so as to take care of us. They give and have never asked for any returns. To them, our thriving is their greatest wish. Another example would be our beloved teachers. They have worked hard the students, who are like the flowers of our Motherland. There are also some volunteers in our society. Regardless of the weather and adversities, they have never failed to give back to society.
As I continue to read on carefully, I realised that Oscar Wilde not only praised devoted individuals like the Happy Prince and the swallow but also criticised the snobbish characters in his stories. Such snobbish characters include the officials and in particular, Mayor of the town. They are unable to differentiate right from wrong and just obey the orders given by the Mayor. The Happy Prince has given his precious stones to the people to help them and yet his statue is still being torn down at the end of the day. This depressing situation is unfortunately similar to what we have in real-life.
I've also learnt another very important thing. That is having the looks may be important but ultimately, what's inside matters the most. The Happy Prince gave his precious stones to the people. After he did so, his glamourous appearance became a thing of the past but his inner beauty outshone his appearance and thus they couldn't burn his heart at the end of the day.
