I will never forget the winter in 1846, in which we crossed the Salt Lake Desert. We got lost soon after we entered the desert. People with little common sense know that no one can cross the desert without water. Our water was getting less and less and we couldn't find any new source. Some livestock were killed as they were too weak to drag any barrows. All we counted on to get out of the desert were our legs. After all these weeks, we've already got used to the dead animals and abandoned carriages.
The situation was too bad for anyone to lower his guard. Everyone strived to live. There was once that I was too exhausted and tired and almost fell behind the team, but I was able to follow up with them at the end.
