One of the dilemmas with the expansion of international study programs over the past decade is their highly-variable quality.Some are rigorous and provide substantial engagement with the local population and environment while others are rather undemanding "culture" tours with marginal substance.This observation applies not only to China but to many other countries as well.Programs which emphasize highlights,whether cathedrals or entrepreneurs,require careful substantive integration if they are to be meaningful and productive.And programs which depend heavily on translation need translators who understand the substance of the exchange,not just vocabulary.For the past decade internationalization has been a continuing theme in American higher education and the growing interest in China reflects that.The challenge is to make sure what should be a formative experience for American students is one which values quality and not merely sightseeing.
