企业形象识别设计是现代工业设计和现代企业管理营运相结合的产物.以IBM公司为代表的美国企业在20世纪50年代开始把企业形象作为新的而又具体的经营要素.为了研究企业形象塑造的具体方法确立了一个新的研究领域,出现了Corporate Design(企业设计)、Corporate look(企业形貌)、Specific Design(特殊设计)、Design Policy(设计政策)等不同的名词,后来统一称之为企业识别,简称CI（corporate identity）,而由这个领域规划出来的设计系统,称之为企业识别系统(Corporate Identity System),简称CIS.
CIS一般定义为：将企业经营理念与精神文化,运用整体传达系统(特别是视觉传达系统)传达给企业周边的关系者,并掌握使其对企业产生一致的认同感与价值观.也就是结合现代设计观念与企业管理理论的整体运作,以刻画企业个性,塑造企业优良形象,这样一个整体计系统称之为企业形象识别系统.
CIS的构成要素：

CIS—BIS(Behavior Identity System)行为识别系统
VIS(Visual Identity System)
视觉识别系统
