Generally,bio-ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass
consists of three major steps,namely:(i) pretreatment,(ii) enzymatic
hydrolysis and (iii) fermentation.The first step,which
involves pretreatment has been discussed in the earlier section.The
second step is the enzymatic hydrolysis process.This step involves
conversion of cellulose into glucose,and hemicellulose into several
pentoses and hexoses .The glucose is finally fermented
into ethanol by selected microorganism.Note that the conversion
of cellulose and hemicellulose fractions of lignocellulosic
biomass such as rice straw and rice husk,can be achieved either by
simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) or separate
enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation.Binod et al.provide
an overview on the potential technologies to produce ethanol from
rice straw.Chen and Qiu discussed their group’s recent research
advances in ethanol production technologies from rice straw that
are based on fractional conversion .
