This work examines two biosorbents, silk sericin and chitosan for selective gold
adsorption. Sericin is a protein component of silk produced by Bombyx mori silkworm
[33] and about 50,000 tons of sericin waste are generated each year from raw silk
processing worldwide [34]. Sericin finds uses in cosmetics and fabrics [35, 36] and
shows considerable promise for protein adsorption [37], drug delivery [38-40] and
tissue engineering [41]. Although Ishikawa and coworkers [42] show gold-cyanide
ion is adsorbed and accumulated up to 0.1 g per gram of silk, there is no similar gold
adsorption study on sericin. Chitosan has been studied for adsorption of metal
pollutants [43, 44], and is considered to be a promising adsorbent because of its lowcost
and efficiency [45]. It is a linear polysaccharide consisting of acetylated and
deacetylated glucosamine units and is mainly derived from crustacean shells, a
major waste byproduct of shrimp farming. Chitosan was successfully modified and
used for gold adsorption [46, 47], and the 4-amino-4’-nitroazobenzene modified
chitosan adsorbed only Au and Pd in the presence of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn in the
solution [48].
