What suggestions do you have for others on being successful
in software (either R&D or business)?
Software is a wonderful medium because of the experimentation you can do
with no dire consequences. To really be adventurous while also being disci-
plined is my advice. At VMware, we focused on quality, and everyone was
very proud of it. We were able to do very innovative new things that nobody
had ever done before, and do them with quality. The software industry is so
interesting right now. The wonderful thing about software is that you can do
pretty much any discipline because software is needed for almost everything.
I would encourage people to think about what is deeply interesting to them
and find a way to work in that area, so that they can be in a role where they
feel productive and creative in what they are building. I think software is such
an excellent base for whatever youre going to do, from research to manag-
ment, because it provides a useful way to model and monitor and even re-
create the world.
One piece of advice I would give people is to always make sure youre in
an environment that leaves you feeling empowered to fully use your talents,
and that you feel appreciated for the work you do. If you are not, work con-
structively to change your current environment so that it does meet these cri-
teria; if you cant, make a change
You have two graduate degrees. Do you feel that graduate degrees
in computer science (or an MBA, for that matter) are beneficial to
career success in software? Do you see it as a benefit when
recruiting someone?
Certainly, a graduate degree never hurts anybody, but in software, I would
never assume that someone wasnt immensely talented just because they
dont have a graduate degree. In software, its easier to excel based on merit
I think a graduate degree can be great training, but it tends to be more some-
thing you would do because you have a deeper interest rather than something
to move your career forward. Of course, some positions, such as professor,
clearly require it.

entering the field?
When working in software, be meticulous and think long-term about the con-
sequences of what you are doing; dont sacrifice that ever. In terms of wor-
ing in software, it is one of the best ways to be in a position to keep learning
and creating, due to the flexibility and the increasing pace of new develop-
ments and discoveries.
