The dipole moment,mu,of a polar molecule is the vector sume of all the individual bond moments.Mathematically,mu is the product of the magnitude of the partial charge, delta, and the distance,d,between the centers of the opposite charge,mu = delta * d.The unit for mu is the Debye (D).
2.no.
3.yes.if the individual polar bonds are arranged symmetrically so that the effect of any one bond is cacelled by the effect of the other(s) the net effect of dipole moment will be zero.An example,is BeCl2,where the individual Be-Cl bonds are polar, but the two bond moments are equal and in opposite directions, and their vector sum is zero:ClCl.
