With regards to what causes the different ways of thinking between foreigners and Chinese ,exactly including those Chinese people of foreign nationality,we consider it a key.
Our Chinese are inclined to follow foreigners’ “advanced” things,products,famous brands,facilities,Codes of Conduct,culture,technology,and also the tourism system.
We may think the London rickshaw a tourist attraction,but never the same to a Chinese "human-powered vehicle".
Why do we have to create a standard image for those foreign tourists?Why do we have no confidence in ourselves to such a degree?What do we have to hide?
One special interviewee of ours ,zhang,is a Chinese Canada college student.He expressed a firm opposition to Rickshaws ,which completely differ from other foreigner’s favor.He said that :”The Rickshaws represents backwardness,uncivilization and even a history of humiliation,which is nowadays China are going to get rid of.It ought to be forbidden.”
But actually those real foreigner never thought it so seriously.It is the developing country mentality which we all harbored that causes we care so much about our impression on foreigners.On the one hand,we dare not appreciate our once denied values,on the other hand,we pursue foreign system,longing for getting Highly praised by foreigners.
This mentality resulted a series of problems.Having large population and lacking time to develope,China's situation is rather different from foreign countries.Foreigners may be cheated in official taxis ,for They fully trust the authoritative supervision.They even don’t alert to the taxi if it has a company sign.But in China there exists concession in supervision.As to the rickshaws,it is natural for those poor men to earn a living in big cities.They need the jobs and their winning a market means they are needed too,especially when the taxi is more expensive.Why not acknowledging rickshaws officially and establish an unique rickshaws company if they are considered out of control.There is no need for us to follow the example of foreign system.China has her own way to go.
May be we Chinese should be more confident and frank to ourselves .Our investigation revealed that foreigners don’t look down on the rickshaw in the least,to the contrary it is the Chinese opinion.
What is China?It is to find out the answer that those foreign tourists come for world and see China on their own eyes.As a word from Andrea Hunt,” When the rickshaw is slowly moving forward,When the music of Chinese opera is outflowing from the radio ,When the oncoming traffic passed me by,When constant pothole jostling enriched my ride,I feel I touched the indeed China.”
