Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff has been re-elected to a second term to lead the world’s fifth-largest nation.With more than 99 percent of the votes counted,she won 51.6 percent of the ballots (选票).
The result means another four years in power for the Workers’ Party (劳工党).It has lifted 40 million Brazilians out of poverty and reduced unemployment to record lows since 2003.
Rousseff is nicknamed Brazil’s “Iron Lady.” Her brusque (粗鲁的) manner and short temper (暴躁脾气) have earned her a formidable reputation.She has fired several ministers over corruption allegations (指控) and prided herself on her investigation of government corruption.
Born in 1947,Rousseff grew up in an upper- middle-class family.Though she had a dream to be a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员),she quickly abandoned it and joined the left-wing movement against Brazil’s military dictatorship (军事独裁政府) which had seized power in 1964.
