in USA and Sicily --> Mafia, and some times the small ones are called gangsters or gangs
Legally (what the congress and the court used) they are labelled as "subversive organizations" which includes the "具有黑社会性质的组织" and organized crime syndicates.

Gang只是一班小混混的那种，算不上黑社会。
Triad通常指国外唐人街那些潮州帮，泛指华人黑社会团伙。
Mafia就是《教父》里面那种意大利式黑手党，也就是我们说的黑社会团伙。
把黑社会的头目叫做Godfather其实就是因为《教父》这个影片。
还有近年才流行的mob，国内称为“快闪族”，一堆专门做些出人意料但没有太大实际意义的人。

电影或者电视上常会出现的一个香港警方机构，叫做“O记”，就是“有组织犯罪调查科”就是专门与黑社会打交道的，所以黑社会他们也会称之为Organized Crime Synicates。
