春秋时,大教育家孔子有很多学生,其中有一个叫子羽,一个叫宰予.子羽因为长得很难看,所以孔子对他的态度十分冷淡,后来子羽只好退学,回去自己钻研学问.而宰予因为长得仪表堂堂,又能说会道,因此孔子很喜欢他,认为这个学生将来一定很有出息.
然而,事情的发展却出乎孔子的意料之外,子羽是一个热爱学习和喜欢独立思考的人,他离开孔子后更发奋努力学习、钻研,成了一个很著名的学者.很多青年因此而慕名到他门下求学,他的名声也在诸侯之间传开了.相反,宰予却非常懒惰.尽管孔子非常认真地教,可是他的学习成绩极差,孔子曾再三地劝导他,但他都不听,气得孔子把他比作没有用的朽木.
后来,宰予靠着他的口才,在齐国做官,可是没多久,就因为和别人一起作乱,被齐王处死了.孔子听到宰予的死讯,很感慨地说:"从子羽身上使我明白,不能以外貌来衡量一个人;而宰予的事也告诉我,不能只凭一个人所说的话来衡量他."
