of $6 per hour per month that the engineering service is performed earlier than
required; or
4) Satisfy some of the customers’ requirements late,which involves a penalty
[deductible from the usual engineering service fees charged] of $10 per hour per
month that the engineering work is performed late—as provided in a penalty clause
in the service contract.
VES employs 25 engineers on its staff – working eight hours per day – at an average rate of
$50 per hour.Overtime rate is at 150% of regular time rate.Customers’ expected
engineering services requirements (in engineer-hours) for the next six months are as follows:

Assume that there 20 working days in each month.Develop an aggregate plan for VES for
the coming six months using an appropriate mathematical programming model which
minimizes total relevant costs,such that all requirements are exactly met by the end of the
planning horizon.
Obviously,the engineer-hours cannot be inventoried,so one cannot refer to beginning or
ending inventory levels.The optimal aggregate plan – in its “simple format” – should
indicate for each month the total number of service hours performed either in excess or
short of customers’ requirements for that month.Attach as separate exhibits the appropriate
