Mind the gap
Gap year means taking a year out between school and university.As gap year is becoming a popular decision among many students,the issue of choice has been controversially discussed,many students and parents are hesitated when the question is raised,should I take a year off?
Taking a year off is helpful for finding out one's interest.Many students are not quite sure about what they want to do in the future,apart from getting a good grade.Students can use a year to think for themselves carefully.For instance,Teri,a student who was interviewed in the radio realised that she liked children and teaching not untill she was asked to help teach English in a small school in Thailand.Therefore,she has a clear picture of what she might want to do in the future,a teacher perhaps.
Study is about reading books and answering questions at school.It is all theoretical,though.Students may not be able to fully appreciate and understand the significance of certain things unless they have been practiced in real life.As Teri mentioned during her interview,she worked her way to Thailand and learned the value of money.Teri can understand how valuable the money are because she earned them by her own hands and felt how hard it was to make money.
Even more,if you take a flight to another country or travel around the world,you can see different people and their distinct culture.For me,as an example,last year,I spent two months in my father's home country Jordan.I was able to practice my Arabic and had an exotic life there.Living in another country helps me to have a further reaching view of the world,learn new language and learn different ideas of many things.As the world is becoming a one whole community,"international student" are more required.
The substantial cost required for the trip is often inevitable if you are going to spend the year abroad.If the student can not make use of the time deliberately,it would be a waste of time and money.
To sum up,it is down to personal favour what an individual decides to do.The most important is that everyoneshould have a clear and well-organised plan before they make the choice.
