Based on the observation of the thickness of dry sand layer in mobile and fixed dunes’ windward slope in the west of Horqin sandy land,we investigated the spatial distribution of dry sand layer.The results showed that the thickness of dry sand layer in windward slope was mainly between 5 and 15 cm,92.0% and 98.6% of thickness of dry sand layer in mobile and fixed dunes belong to this extent,respectively.Sand fixing plants played an important role in the thickness and spatial distribution of dry sand layer in dunes.The thickness of dry sand layer in mobile dunes showed significant differences,while the thickness of dry sand layer in windward slope was much thicker in the upper west areas,it was much thinner in the lower east areas in mobile dunes,its average thickness was 9.58±3.95 cm changing from 0 to 40 cm and the coefficient of variation was 0.41.The spatial distribution of dry sand layer showed spherical model,and there was moderate spatial correlation through variogram.In contrast,the thickness of dry sand layer in fixed dunes was more evenly distributed and there were no significant differences in dry sand layer of fixed dunes,its average thickness was 10.91±1.7 cm ranging from 0 to 20 cm,and the coefficient of variation was only 0.16.
