It is important for the schools and the teachers to persistently believe that all children can learn if they were taught in proper way.They should understand the fact that the strengths and skills of every student varies; some students may understand certain concepts faster than others.Therefore,they have the responsibility to encourage students in exploring useful learning methods that’s suitable for themselves and set up reasonable expectations for all of the students.The poem “Graded Paper” shows an example of a teacher who tries to correct all the mistakes in the student’s essay and edits the essay in his own style of writing.As the author,Mark Halliday,states:“you are not/me,finally,/and though this is an awkward problem,involving/the inescapable fact that you are so young,so young/ it is also a delightful provocation” (Halliday,handout).This is the point when the teacher suddenly realizes that he should give the student opportunity to explore learning in his own way.He recognizes that the student is still young and he ought not to compare himself with the student.He gives the student a good grade as a way to show his encouragement for the student in maintaining his own writing approach.The teacher has made the right decision by providing helpful feedback to the student rather than force the student to demonstrate a writing style like his.Overall,teachers should have positive expectations toward students that motivate them to fulfill their potentials.
